Cloves

Cloves

Cloves are the unopened pink blossom buds of the evergreen clove tree. Clove buds are grown on the edge of the branch. Once they become mature they turn dark green and these clove buds turn into flowers and ultimately fall. Therefore clove buds are picked by hand before they fall themselves and these clove buds are dried in the sun until they turn black or brown.

Like other spices in Sri Lanka, cloves too are a spice that many can't cook without. They are famous for giving their warm, sweet and fragrant taste to ginger bread and pumpkin pie.
Cloves have been used from those days for various things. Sri Lankans those days used to chew two or three clove buds to get rid of bad breath. Clove powder has been used mixed with other spices as kind of a toothpaste. Still in sri lanka there is this tooth powder made of cloves and other herbs. Sri lankans use this powder when brushing teeth. Some believe that this is part of the reason why Sri Lankans have white and strong teeth. In addition you can find clove oil in certain mouth washes and toothpastes also.

clove buds and cinnamon oil have a lot in common. They both are good for tooth ache. In fact they both are a good pain killer. Some confuse clove oil with cinnamon oil because they both have similar fragrances.
